In recent years, we’ve seen a rise in the number of families looking for natural or green burial options. For some families, it’s due to a desire to reduce environmental impact, continuing on their loved one’s tradition of caring for the world around them. For others, it comes from a place of knowing that their loved one felt peace amongst nature, and they feel peace knowing that their loved one will be at rest where they felt most at home in life.
Whatever the reason may be, Washington Park North is honored to accommodate these wishes with our natural burial ground, Kessler Woods. Nestled right in our beautiful 100-acre park-like campus, Kessler Woods is a natural burial alternative in Central Indiana for those seeking a farewell for their loved one that honors the beauty of the natural world.
Why Natural Burial?
Natural burials, also called green burials, were created in response to the desire to have less of an environmental impact during end-of-life care. While Washington Park Cemetery Association takes great strides to reduce our environmental impact at every burial, we also offer additional options for green burials for Indiana families who want the smallest possible environmental impact.
Natural or green burials typically include avoiding embalming chemicals, using biodegradable coffins, and maintaining sustainable practices for the allocation of burial land. At its core, a natural burial is about a return to nature, and it requires a natural setting, like Kessler Woods.
Kessler Woods: Central Indiana’s Natural Burial Ground
When we created Washington Park North in Indianapolis, we sought to maintain harmony with the natural world, building a place that celebrates the artistry of what humans can create and what nature naturally provides. That’s why our campus is designed to be a peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of the outside world, and perhaps nowhere is that more true than in our Kessler Woods.
With a focus on environmental stewardship and conservation, Kessler Woods is a place where we can stop and remember not only our loved ones but the connected spirit we all have with the natural world.
Kessler Woods is a balance of honoring old traditions and creating new ones. While providing faith-based burial traditions as options for families, we also help build a farewell that celebrates the personal values of those we lay to rest. Just as no tree grows on its own but rather is built upon centuries of support from its environment, a burial at Kessler Woods celebrates the interconnectedness of families, communities, and the natural world.
